The wide world of sports

A collection of sports action and features
Sifan Hassan is surrounded by fans from Oromiya (Ethiopia), her home country, after competing in the Women’s 5,000 at the Prefontaine Classic in 2021.

Barry Kough, my old boss at the Lewiston Morning Tribune, told me he liked to look at the sports portion of a photographer’s portfolio first.

His reasoning?

The challenge of sports photography was a level playing field that allows for more objective comparisons between photographers’ work.

Hand-eye coordination, observational skills, and knowledge of the game all come into play. The athletic event begins, is played and ends in predictable fashion. What a photographers does with the time in between is up to them.

I know what he meant.

Here are a few of my favorite sports images from over the years.
